A. Procedures of Teaching

Every demonstration teaching has an allotted time of 45 minutes. One of my strategies is to compartmentalize the sessions into four (4) phases which are (1) motivation, (2) lesson, (3) application, and (4) evaluation.

Phase 1 (Motivation)

  • During Phase 1, five (5) to seven (7) minutes are given to engage and immerse the learners in the discussion. Personally, what I did was integrate traditional gamified learning into the class. For instance, I utilized “Pass the Cube” to determine who would answer. The music will play, and the one holding the cube will be the one to answer. I also employed thematic games like Blue’s Clues when the topic was about context clues. Motivational activities are one of the integral components of the teaching and learning flow since it is one of the strategies that will engage the learners to listen attentively in the class.

Phase 2 (Lesson)

  • The lesson proper’s allotted time is more emphasized than other phases. This is the part where the learners gradually and comprehensively learn about the subject matter. As a Pre-Service Teacher, I utilize learner-centered discussion. I let the learners read the given sentences and examples while helping them unravel their meaning and context. I value the principles of learner-centered teaching, where the teacher is only the facilitator of learning. During the discussion, I actively engage the learners by asking them questions or doing retention strategies where they will repeat the keywords from a certain topic. To illustrate, I taught communication to the learners, and we utilized the keywords that communication is “connection” to others. Strategies like these also help the learners to be more active in the discussion.

Phase 3 (Application)

  •  To ensure the learners’ understanding of the lesson, the learners will answer the assigned activities in their workbook. The activities can be either modified by the teacher or remain to what is given. What I did was integrate a strategy in answering the activities. For example, the activity was intended to be answered individually, but I will do it collaboratively. The strategy depends on the targetted competency. Collaborative work is an effective strategy for engaging the learners in doing the activity.

Phase 4 (Evaluation)

  •  To conclude the session, Phase 4 underscores the evaluation of the learners. It does not only include surface-level understanding but also involves their comprehension and profound understanding of the lesson. In my demonstration teachings, I connected the lesson to their experiences. It is to ensure that the learners not only learn the topic in its general sense but they grasp its importance in their everyday lives.
